Description

Danish architects Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen were an inseparable design duo in the mid-20th century, creating many iconic furniture pieces for Fritz Hansen and France & Søn. Beyond furniture, their studio, Hvidt & Mølgaard, was also involved in infrastructure projects, including the important bridges in Jutland—the Little Belt Bridge (1970) and the Vejle Fjord Bridge (1980).

The X Lounge Chair, designed in 1959, is a brilliant example of their ability to combine materials and structure, and remains one of their signature works. The chair’s frame, inspired by traditional wooden tennis rackets, is made from laminated oak with a natural rattan seat. Its most distinctive feature is the X-shaped cross-leg construction, reinforced with solid walnut inlays at the joints, which serve both structural and decorative purposes. The form is understated yet elegant, with a slightly reclined silhouette that suggests relaxation, embodying the Danish mid-century modern ideals of simplicity, functionality, and craftsmanship.

Originally produced by Fritz Hansen, the X Lounge Chair was reintroduced in 2016 by &Tradition in collaboration with the descendants of Hvidt & Mølgaard, as part of a revival of several of their classic designs.
