Description

This Model 418 is the shorter extension variant within the 417 series, designed in 1957 by Peter Hvidt (1916–1986) and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen (1907–1993) for France & Søn. France & Søn was one of the most influential manufacturers within the Danish furniture export system of the 1950s and 1960s, collaborating with numerous designers to bring Danish Modern furniture to the international market. Among these, Hvidt & Mølgaard were one of the most prolific and systematically oriented design partnerships, distinguished by their ability to integrate wooden frame construction, modular composition, and production-oriented structural thinking.

Model 418 follows the fundamental structure of the 417 series, with a teak frame as its primary construction. The seat incorporates an internal spring system covered with foam cushions, balancing structural support and comfort. The system could also be combined with a teak backrest supported by metal elements, as well as a single armrest configuration, creating a light and open visual expression. Rather than a single piece of furniture, this series constitutes an expandable modular system, which could be combined with the Model 417 three-seater daybed and the Model 519 corner table to form an L-shaped arrangement. It became one of the most commercially successful modular furniture systems of its time, with production reaching many thousands of units.

In contrast to traditional enclosed sofas, this design is based on an open wooden frame, detachable cushions, and a modular logic of assembly, emphasizing the clarity of structure and flexibility of use. The proportions of the two-seater avoid visual heaviness within a space, making it suitable for living rooms, studies, or smaller domestic interiors, while allowing it to integrate coherently with other Danish Modern furniture to form a balanced and ordered interior setting.

As one of the representative products of France & Søn, this series demonstrates the balance achieved in postwar Danish furniture between traditional craftsmanship and industrial production. Its value does not lie in sculptural form, but in the clarity of its structural logic and the maturity of its system-based design. The upholstery has been reupholstered to meet contemporary standards of use and maintenance.
