Due to its canvas upholstery, this lounge chair is known in Danish as the Kludestol (Rag Chair/Canvas Chair) and in English as The Rag Chair. Originally designed by Bernt as a piece of home furniture for his wife, the chair features an exceptionally sturdy yet simple structure composed of one-inch-thick timber—available in oak, pitch pine, or teak—forming a stable triangular frame. Its modular design allows it to be extended into infinite sofa configurations, and during the 1970s, it was widely used in the University of Copenhagen, the Panum Institute, and Bovirke’s showrooms.
According to records from the Designmuseum Danmark, the series includes not only the H 701 but also a chaise longue version (H 703) and another chair (H 702), with the manufacturer listed as Schiang | Salesco. However, research in the book SØREN WILLADSENS MØBELFABRIK — Arkitekttegnede møbler i verdensklasse, published by the Vejen Kunstmuseum, reveals that the chair was first introduced in 1965 by Wörts Møbelsnedkeri at the Copenhagen Cabinet-Makers Guild Exhibition. Holger Nissen, the owner of Wörts, noted that only 12 original units were produced by them—half in oak and half in pine.
Subsequently, the H 701 was transitioned into industrial production through a collaboration with Børge Schiang and was handed over to Salesco for marketing in 1975. Nevertheless, the book emphasizes that existing production photographs and visual records confirm the actual manufacturing base was Søren Willadsens Eftf.. This division of labor between "development, marketing, and production" reflects the collaborative models adopted by the Danish furniture industry at the time to address market competition.
