Description

In 1952, Hans J. Wegner designed a height-adjustable brass pendant—model JH1—for Johannes Hansen’s presentation at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition. Compared to the later The Pendant, its form is more elaborate, featuring an additional collar-like ring above the circular shade. It also incorporates an adjustable spherical element, allowing the height of the lamp to be extended and fixed. In its overall appearance, JH1 bears similarities to the P295 pendant designed by Frits Schlegel and produced by Lyfa in 1956.

In 1962, The Pendant was introduced by Johannes Hansen under the model number JH604, and it remains Wegner’s most well-known lighting design. The umbrella-shaped shade is formed from pressed aluminum, while the upper and lower U-shaped handles are made of stainless steel, allowing the user to adjust the height of the lamp without touching the shade itself. The prominent oval sphere above the shade houses the spring mechanism that enables vertical adjustment. Rather than pursuing visual expressiveness, The Pendant reflects a precise calibration of material, proportion, and light within a minimal silhouette. It can be understood as an extension of Wegner’s practice beyond furniture—an exploration of spatial atmosphere and everyday experience, integrating light into his overall design language.

This functional and refined dining pendant was initially produced by Louis Poulsen. However, due to issues with the fabric-covered electrical cord—where long-term wear could lead to short circuits—the height-adjustable version was eventually discontinued. The rights were later acquired by Pandul, a company founded in 1982, which relocated the adjustment mechanism into the ceiling canopy. In recent years, production has been taken over by Carl Hansen & Søn. Current versions are available with shades in white, black, or dark green, and handles in either stainless steel or brass.

The version with the silver finish and oval adjustment sphere is no longer in production.
