Description

Henning Koppel was educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. During the Second World War, he lived in exile in Stockholm, where he designed for Orrefors and Svenskt Tenn and began working with gold and silver objects. After returning to Denmark in 1945, he entered into a long-term collaboration with Georg Jensen that lasted until his death in 1981. Although his work spanned multiple disciplines, his silver designs achieved the greatest international recognition.

The Taverna series was designed by Koppel for Georg Jensen from the 1960s to the early 1970s as a system of cookware. It reflects his continued control over material and form, while marking a shift in his design language—from earlier organic, sculptural expressions toward a more rational and function-oriented modernism.

A defining feature of the series is its use of composite materials: the exterior is made of copper, valued for its excellent thermal conductivity and the natural patina it develops over time; the interior is lined with silver plating or other metal linings to prevent reaction with food and enhance performance. The overall construction emphasizes function and proportion, demonstrating Koppel’s approach of translating sculptural thinking into everyday objects.

This classic series has since been discontinued.
