Description

The refined RY25 is a storage cabinet designed by Hans J. Wegner for Ry Møbler, and forms part of the RY series, a modular storage furniture system developed by Wegner. In this piece, Wegner made rare use of rosewood as the principal material. The cabinet doors employ a tambour-door construction, allowing them to slide into the sides of the cabinet so that no additional exterior space is required when the cabinet is opened. The interior is made of oak and fitted with adjustable shelves and trays, continuing the Danish cabinetmaking tradition of careful attention to internal structure and functional details.

The cabinet rests on a steel frame, with the lower ends of the frame capped by wooden feet. This combination of woodworking and metal structure reflects one of the important characteristics of modern furniture in the 1950s: the integration of industrial materials with traditional cabinetmaking craftsmanship. The solid wood finishing at the feet is also a distinctive detail of the RY series cabinets.

The RY25, also known as the President sideboard, is among the highest-grade cabinet pieces in Wegner’s body of work. The closely fitted wooden slats of the tambour doors, together with the continuous grain pattern, make the doors appear almost as a single unbroken surface, demonstrating a high level of precision craftsmanship. It can be used not only as an independent sideboard, but also combined with bookcases and shelving modules from the RY series to form a larger storage or bookcase wall arrangement.

Unlike Poul Cadovius’s Royal System, which is based on a wall-mounted shelving system, Wegner’s RY series remains grounded in the cabinet as its basic unit. Through the side-by-side combination of cabinets and shelves in different widths, it forms a storage wall closer in concept to built-in furniture than to a wall-mounted system. The RY series holds a particular place in Wegner’s work, as his focus here was not the form of a single piece of furniture, but a storage system that could be composed according to spatial needs, addressing the relationship between furniture, space, and ways of living.
