Description

This distinctive dining chair, with its elegant and slender proportions, was designed by Danish furniture designer Illum Wikkelsø and produced by the Aarhus furniture workshop Brdr. Tromborg / Vestervig Eriksen. The chair is also documented in the official Illum Wikkelsø archive, where the maker is clearly listed as “Brdr. Tromborg and Vestervig Eriksen,” confirming its attribution to Wikkelsø.

Illum Wikkelsø was born in Diernæs, near Faaborg on the Danish island of Funen. He trained as a cabinetmaker at a young age before studying at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen and later in the furniture program at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Among his teachers were Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen and Kaare Klint. He also worked for cabinetmaker Jacob Kjær and at the architectural office of Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen. Wikkelsø moved to Aarhus in 1944 and established his own design studio in 1954, subsequently collaborating with numerous Danish furniture manufacturers, including C.F. Christensen, Søren Willadsen and N. Eilersen.

The furniture workshop Brdr. Tromborg was established in Aarhus in 1938. Holger Vestervig Eriksen trained as a cabinetmaker at the workshop from 1948 to 1952 and took over the business of his former masters in 1957, operating the successor company of Brdr. Tromborg together with Niels Foulum Nielsen. In 1966, the workshop moved into a newly built factory in Lystrup. The company specialized in the production of dining chairs, which were also exported abroad.

Made of rosewood, the chair is distinguished by its tall rear legs, which taper as they extend upward, and by the gently curved solid-wood backrest at the center. The ends of the backrest flare outward like wings, creating a distinctive silhouette together with the slender legs. Fine stretchers connect the front and rear legs, maintaining a light and refined appearance. The carefully finished solid wood and softly rounded transitions reflect the attention to material and craftsmanship characteristic of Danish furniture of the 1950s.

The seat is upholstered in an off-white fabric, creating a soft contrast with the dark grain of the rosewood. According to the official documentation, the chair measures 52 cm wide, 45 cm deep and 86 cm high, with a seat height of 42 cm. Its relatively low seat and elongated backrest make it suitable not only as a dining chair, but also as an occasional chair in a residential interior.
