This piece is a classic armchair, the Vanity Fair, by the Italian brand Poltrona Frau. Designed by the company’s founder Renzo Frau and officially introduced into production in 1930, it is considered one of the most representative examples of the club chair typology and remains one of Poltrona Frau’s iconic products. A gold-plated metal plaque is affixed to the backrest.
The plaque is inscribed as follows:
“Vanity Fair del 1930, riproposta con la stessa tecnica costruttiva e ricoperta con pelle di vitello a pieno fiore. Tiratura limitata. Esemplare n° 11602.”
(This indicates that the present piece is a reissue of the 1930 “Vanity Fair” model, reproduced using the original construction techniques and upholstered in full-grain calf leather. It belongs to a limited production, numbered 11602.)
The chair follows the established Vanity Fair design language, featuring a rounded backrest, thick enveloping armrests, and a loose seat cushion. The overall proportions are full yet inwardly contained.
The internal structure is executed using traditional methods, including a solid beechwood frame and a hand-built spring system, combined with layered padding of foam and feather. Compared to modern industrial foam seating, this type of construction offers a more pronounced sense of layering and resilience.
