Often regarded as a prototype of modern sofa design, the Vanity Fair—also known as Model 904—was created in 1930 by Renzo Frau, founder of the Italian brand Poltrona Frau. At a time when Western upholstered furniture was often characterised by elaborate drapery and decorative detailing, Frau introduced a cleaner and more distinctive form, enriched by the craftsmanship of leather-covered studs. The result became one of the most representative examples of the club chair typology and remains one of Poltrona Frau’s most iconic designs.
Each Vanity Fair features a plated metal plaque on the back, inscribed:
“Vanity Fair del 1930, riproposta con la stessa tecnica costruttiva e ricoperta con pelle di vitello a pieno fiore. Tiratura limitata. Esemplare n° 11602.”
“The 1930 Vanity Fair, reissued using the same original construction techniques and upholstered in full-grain calfskin. Limited edition. Example No. 11602.”
The internal structure is made using traditional upholstery techniques, including a solid beech frame and a hand-tied spring system, combined with multiple layers of padding such as foam and down. The seat construction incorporates hand-worked vegetable fibre and rubberised horsehair, while the loose seat cushion is filled with goose down, providing a deep yet supportive seating experience. Compared with modern industrially produced foam seating, this traditional construction offers a more layered feel and distinctive resilience.
The Vanity Fair is instantly recognisable for its rounded silhouette, substantial enveloping arms, separate seat cushion, and leather-covered studs decorating the backrest and armrests. Its generous yet inward-curving proportions have made it an enduring classic of modern upholstered furniture design.
