Description

The PH 5-4½ pendant lamp represents a continuation of the lighting principles established by Danish designer Poul Henningsen for Louis Poulsen in the 1980s. Since 1926, Henningsen had been pioneering glare-free lighting systems, beginning with his iconic PH 3/3 pendant lamp featuring a three-shade configuration. Over time, his work evolved into a comprehensive range of lighting fixtures that significantly influenced the development of modern lighting design throughout the 20th century.

Although the PH 5-4½ was not designed by Henningsen himself, it was developed in 1984 by architects Sophus Frandsen and Ebbe Christensen for the Aarhus Concert Hall in Denmark. Their design drew upon Henningsen’s original optical theories and shade geometry, resulting in a version optimized for medium-sized public spaces requiring precise light distribution.

The lamp features three spun aluminum shades, with a white-painted inner surface to enhance reflection and a matte lacquered exterior. Its geometry follows Henningsen’s principle of the logarithmic spiral, which distributes light evenly across the curved surfaces and minimizes glare. Even when installed in lower-ceiling spaces, the lamp prevents direct view of the light source.

With a diameter of 465 mm and height of 267 mm, the PH 5-4½ accommodates a standard E27 light source and supports various modern bulbs. It maintains the classic silhouette of the PH 5 while offering refined proportions and light diffusion, making it well-suited for dining areas, meeting rooms, galleries, and other architectural environments that benefit from gentle, controlled lighting.

As a version of the PH system designed specifically for architectural applications, the PH 5-4½ embodies both the scientific rigor and aesthetic clarity that define the legacy of Henningsen and the enduring values of Scandinavian design.
