The PH 4½–4 Glass Pendant Lamp is one of the iconic lighting designs by Danish designer Poul Henningsen (1894–1967) for Louis Poulsen. Its design lineage traces back to 1926, when Henningsen created the first three-shade pendant lamp, the PH 3/3, as part of a lighting system for the Forum exhibition hall in Copenhagen. The multi-layered reflector structure he pioneered would go on to evolve into a wide range of PH lamps in different forms and sizes, becoming one of the most representative lighting series in the history of Danish modern design.
The PH 4½–4 pendant is a continuation of this design system, retaining the core principle of the three-shade glare-free configuration. The lamp features three hand-blown opal glass shades, measuring 29 cm, 14.4 cm, and 7.5 cm in diameter. Using a logarithmic spiral derived from optical calculations, Henningsen designed the shades to reflect light evenly across the curved surfaces, effectively reducing glare and providing soft, comfortable illumination. The light source remains concealed from view unless the lamp is observed directly from below.
The outer surface of each glass shade is smooth, while the inner surface is sandblasted to further diffuse the light, creating a warm and even glow. The fixture is supported by a chrome-plated metal suspension, giving it a refined and minimalist appearance that suits dining rooms, meeting spaces, hallways, and other settings where soft ambient light is desired.
As a significant piece within the PH family, the PH 4½–4 reflects Henningsen’s integration of lighting science with everyday usability. It also embodies the Nordic design ethos, where function and beauty are inseparable. Still in production by Louis Poulsen today, the lamp stands as a lasting symbol of harmony between classic form and contemporary relevance.
