Description

In 1957, architects Eva and Nils Koppel invited Poul Henningsen to design the lighting for the newly built Langelinie Pavilion restaurant in Copenhagen. Seeking to combine the functional lighting required by a restaurant with a festive atmosphere, Henningsen completed the PH Artichoke in just three months.
The design developed from the optical principles he had explored in the seven-shade PH Septima during the 1920s. The PH Artichoke consists of 72 metal leaves arranged in twelve staggered layers around a central frame. The leaves in each layer differ in size, angle and curvature, allowing light to spread softly in every direction while ensuring that the light source remains concealed from every viewpoint.

The original version featured brushed copper leaves with a pale rose-coloured reflective coating on the inside, casting a warm, golden light across the dining tables and guests. Its overlapping leaves evoke both the layered form of an artichoke and the organic silhouette of a pine cone, giving the lamp a powerful sculptural presence even when unlit.

Although exceptional in both function and appearance, the PH Artichoke is a highly unusual work within Henningsen’s career. Its complex construction, extensive use of materials and high production cost stand, to some extent, in contrast to the democratic design principles he had long advocated. Completed when he was in his sixties, however, it represents a late-career synthesis of precise optical engineering, intricate craftsmanship and expressive organic form—a freer and more opulent culmination of more than three decades of research into lighting. The PH Artichoke remains one of Poul Henningsen’s most celebrated works and an enduring classic of Danish modern lighting design.
