About the Oda Collection
Noritsugu Oda is one of the most distinguished collectors and researchers of modern furniture and everyday design. Over decades, he has dedicated himself to the collection, study, and promotion of Scandinavian design, earning recognition both in Japan and internationally.
His extensive collection spans more than 50 years and includes:
*Over 1,350 classic chairs
*Approximately 80 tables and 50 cabinets
*A wide range of lighting, ceramics, glassware, and design posters
*More than 20,000 books and reference materials
These invaluable works have formed the basis of numerous carefully curated exhibitions with clear thematic direction. Notable examples include:
“1000 Chairs Exhibition” (2002, Tokai University, Hokkaido)
“Living Gracefully and Beautifully: Scandinavian Design Exhibition” (2023, Takashimaya)
“Poul Kjærholm: The Eternal Minimalist” (2024, Panasonic Shiodome Museum of Art, Tokyo)
Professor Oda’s dedication stems from a lifelong passion for design. Despite modest financial circumstances, he reinvested all his earnings from graphic design and illustration into his collection, even acquiring iconic pieces through installment payments.
In 1979, he co-founded the CHAIRS? Research Laboratory with Professor Keiko Seno of Kyoto City University of Arts. Since 1982, he has made multiple research trips to Denmark to interview and document the work of legendary designers such as Finn Juhl and Hans J. Wegner, preserving critical materials and insights at a time when the Danish furniture industry was in decline.
Oda currently resides in Hokkaido, and has donated his entire collection to the town of Higashikawa, where a design museum centered on his archive is being planned—an enduring base for the preservation and education of design culture.
This Poul Kjærholm Archival Poster reflects the elegance and clarity of its subject matter. Whether for design research, exhibition curation, or interior display, it is a piece of great charm and scholarly significance.
