--About the Oda Collection--
Professor Noritsugu Oda is one of the most prominent collectors and researchers of modern furniture and everyday design. For over half a century, he has dedicated himself to the collection, study, and promotion of Scandinavian design. His work is widely acclaimed in Japan and abroad, particularly within the Danish design community.
His extensive archive includes:
*More than 1,350 classic chairs
*Approximately 80 tables and 50 cabinets
*A wide range of lighting, ceramics, glassware, and design-related posters
*And over 20,000 books and reference materials
These valuable holdings have formed the basis for numerous well-structured, thematically rich exhibitions. Among the most notable are:
“1000 Chairs Exhibition” (2002, Tokai University, Hokkaido)
“Living Gracefully and Beautifully: Scandinavian Design Exhibition” (2023, Takashimaya)
“Poul Kjærholm: The Eternal Minimalist” (2024, Panasonic Shiodome Museum of Art, Tokyo)
Driven by a pure passion for design, Professor Oda devoted himself to collecting even when financial means were limited. He reinvested all of his income as a graphic designer and illustrator into acquiring furniture, often through installment payments.
In 1979, he co-founded the CHAIRS? Research Laboratory with Professor Keiko Seno of Kyoto City University of Arts. From 1982 onward, he made multiple research visits to Denmark to meet and interview legendary designers such as Finn Juhl and Hans J. Wegner, documenting their ideas and preserving their designs at a time when the Danish furniture industry was in decline.
Today, Professor Oda resides in Hokkaido. He has donated his entire collection to the town of Higashikawa, where a design museum centered on his archive is planned, serving as a lasting hub for design preservation and education.
The Hans J. Wegner Archival Poster is elegantly organized and visually refined. With both aesthetic and academic value, it is a compelling piece—whether for design research, exhibition reference, or interior display.
