Description

The Spoke-Back Sofa was designed by Børge Mogensen in 1945. At the end of the Second World War, European homes were becoming smaller, while materials and resources remained limited. In this context, Børge Mogensen and Hans J. Wegner began to consider furniture forms that could respond to modern living and compact domestic spaces. The Spoke-Back Sofa emerged from this background and was first presented in 1945 at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition, at Johannes Hansen’s stand.

The work is often described as one of Mogensen’s proposals for a “future type” of furniture, suggesting that furniture should adapt to new patterns of living and changing lifestyles, rather than remain confined to the traditional form of living-room furniture.

One of the most important features of the Spoke-Back Sofa is its multifunctional use. One armrest can be lowered, allowing the piece to function as a chaise longue or daybed. In homes or rooms with limited space, a single piece of furniture could therefore serve both as a sofa and as a bed. This convertible type of furniture was significant in postwar European furniture design, reflecting a shift toward furniture that responded to modern life and changing housing conditions, rather than simply following established furniture types.

In form and construction, the sofa’s back is composed of wooden spindles. This structure can be traced back to wooden chairs and benches of the 18th and 19th centuries in Britain and Northern Europe, such as Windsor chairs and spindle-back benches. Mogensen’s design approach was not merely to pursue new forms; he often looked to the structures and proportions of historical furniture as a foundation, then transformed them into furniture suitable for modern living. The Spoke-Back Sofa therefore combines the structural language of traditional furniture with the functional concept of modern furniture, making it one of Mogensen’s early representative works in translating historical furniture into a modern form.

The Spoke-Back Sofa did not immediately attract widespread attention when it was introduced in 1945, shortly after the end of World War II. It was not until 1963, when production was resumed by Fritz Hansen, that the design gradually gained broader recognition and eventually became one of Børge Mogensen’s most iconic works. In recent years, the sofa has continued to be produced by Fredericia.
