The MODUS Series was designed by the renowned Danish industrial designer Kristian Solmer Vedel (1923–2003) and produced by Søren Willadsen Møbelfabrik, one of Denmark's leading furniture manufacturers of the era. This collection represents Vedel’s extended exploration of modular thinking, structural clarity, and functional flexibility during the late 1960s and 1970s.
The designer, Kristian Vedel, graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (Furniture Department) and was deeply influenced by Kaare Klint’s classical functionalism and the German Bauhaus movement. He served as the first chairman of the Danish Industrial Designers Association and received prestigious accolades, including the Silver Medal at the Milan Triennale and the Lunning Prize.
First unveiled at the Fredericia Furniture Fair in 1963, the MODUS Series was immediately hailed by Mobilia magazine as an "invigorating work that brings a completely new direction of thought." It later graced the cover of the British magazine Ideal Home and was selected for the Danish Design Exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London.
The design philosophy continues Vedel’s focus on the principles of "systematization" and "intelligible structure":The body is constructed from a solid wood frame, utilizing a square frame (including four legs) as the basic modular element. This foundation allows for flexible configurations as chairs, tables, or sofas. The structure is minimalist, creating clear vertical and horizontal relationships that present a stable and rational geometric order.
In terms of materials, the seat and backrest—upholstered in leather over foam—serve as a comfortable interface for the body. This provides a striking sensory contrast against the solid, sturdy Rosewood frame components.
Søren Willadsen produced the MODUS series for approximately 20 years, until the company faced bankruptcy in 1983 due to financial difficulties. In 2023, to commemorate the centenary of Vedel's birth, the Japanese manufacturer Miyazaki Chair Factory collaborated with the Vedel family to resume production of the MODUS Series, bringing this beloved classic back into modern living spaces.
