Description

This Model 317 armchair was designed by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen in 1956 for Søborg Møbelfabrik. Crafted from solid teak, the chair features a clear and stable structure with carefully controlled proportions. The gently curved backrest provides direct and effective support, while the inward-drawn armrests give the overall silhouette a restrained character. The seat is woven in paper cord. Within the same series, both armchairs and dining chairs were produced, with seat options including paper cord and cane.

Søborg Møbelfabrik was founded in 1890 by cabinetmaker Jacob E. Jacobsen and remained under the management of the Jacobsen family for generations. The company was dedicated to producing consistently high-quality furniture that embodied the Danish design tradition. Over time, it collaborated with several of Denmark’s most important mid-century designers, establishing a strong position between design and manufacture. In 2017, Søborg Møbelfabrik was acquired by Carl Hansen & Søn. This Hvidt & Mølgaard design has since been reissued by &Tradition under the name Drawn HM4.
