Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen entered the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts in 1928 and later studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Kaare Klint. Peter Hvidt graduated from the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts, trained in architecture and woodworking, and taught there from 1942 to 1945. In 1944 they founded the Hvidt & Mølgaard studio, collaborating for over 30 years—until Hvidt’s retirement in 1975—across furniture, interior design, architecture, and large bridge projects.
Designed by Hvidt & Mølgaard and produced by Søborg Møbler, Model 301 is a compact two-door cabinet. The exterior is defined by fine teak grain and a clean, restrained form, with distinctive paired circular recessed pulls at center. The doors are fitted with brass hinges and a lock, retaining the original keyhole. Inside, three shallow pull-out trays at the top organize cutlery and small items, while a height-adjustable shelf and a generous lower compartment complete the storage.
The carcass, pulls, and drawer frames are solid teak joined with finger joints; only the door leaves are teak-veneered plywood to ensure the dimensional stability of large surfaces. Compared with all-veneer construction, this specification entails more complex workmanship and higher material and labor costs, while improving durability and tactile quality. A solid plinth base adds structural and visual stability, making the piece suitable as a sideboard, entry cabinet, or study storage.
Note: partial damage to the left-hand pull. Labels from Søborg Møbler and the Danish Furnituremakers’ Control are present on the back.
