Description

A designer who retained a strong sense of playfulness throughout his life, Hans Bølling began spending long hours in the workshop from the age of fourteen, often staying until late at night to sketch, make models and create all kinds of objects from wood. For him, making things was a form of play, and many of his most charming and humorous designs grew out of this playful spirit.
As a young man, Bølling won a design competition and used the prize money to purchase woodworking equipment, allowing him to begin making these imaginative wooden figures. Originally created as gifts for his wife and close friends, they were so warmly received that he eventually began producing and selling them.
In the 1960s, Bølling began collaborating with T. Ørskov & Co., which produced a number of his charming wooden figures. This pair follows the distinctive visual language of his best-known Optimist & Pessimist series, with simple rounded bodies made from turned solid wood, exaggerated noses and natural hair. Through subtle differences in posture, expression and gaze—one leaning forward and the other looking upward—the figures convey entirely different personalities and emotions, demonstrating Bølling’s remarkable ability to bring humour and character to life with only a few simple elements.
Unlike the more commonly seen versions measuring around 12 cm in height, this miniature pair stands at only 8 cm. The thick braided-cord arms of the standard version are replaced here by simple leather loops.
Bølling’s wooden figures were never intended to be realistic. Instead, they transformed the very idea of play into a design language. Through simple materials such as wood and natural hair, he created characters full of individuality and charm, revealing a warm and deeply human side of post-war Danish modern design.
Early versions produced by T. Ørskov & Co. in the 1960s are now sought after by collectors of Hans Bølling’s wooden figures. This rare and charming miniature version may have been produced either by Hans Bølling himself or by T. Ørskov & Co.
