Description

This set of coloured enamel cookware belongs to the Krenit series designed by Danish designer Herbert Krenchel and manufactured / distributed by Torben Ørskov & Co. Introduced in 1953, Krenit was formed from thin sheet steel and finished with an enamel coating, making it lightweight, durable, and easy to clean. The series was awarded the Gold Medal at the Milan Triennale in 1954, and became one of the representative examples of post-war Danish modern household design.

Herbert Krenchel was originally a civil engineer and materials researcher, with a particular interest in materials, surface treatment, and industrial production methods. The name Krenit combines Krenchel and Eternit, reflecting his interest in industrial materials and mass-production technology. The series is known for its simple curves, thin-edged forms, and vivid colours, transforming everyday kitchenware into modern design objects that combine functionality with decorative appeal.

This set is composed of coloured two-handled shallow pans / gratin dishes from the Krenit series, with coloured enamel applied to both the interior and exterior surfaces. The red-orange, yellow, pale blue, and blue colourways, together with the rounded shallow forms and side handles, allow the pieces to be used both for cooking and for serving directly at the table. Their stackable form also reflects the Danish modern emphasis of the 1950s and 1960s on function, storage, and visual clarity.

Unlike the more commonly seen Krenit bowls with black exteriors and coloured interiors, this set features coloured enamel on both sides, giving greater emphasis to colour effect and decorative presence when used on the dining table.

This Krenit series was produced by Torben Ørskov & Co. in the 1950s, but was later discontinued due to changes in the enamel manufacturing environment. In 2007, Herbert Krenchel and his family approached Normann Copenhagen, which led to the revival of the series. Normann Copenhagen reintroduced the Krenit series in 2008.
