This ice bucket belongs to the Rare Wood series, introduced in 1961 by Jens H. Quistgaard in collaboration with Richard Nissen. The series is made from rare tropical hardwoods sourced from Nicaragua, Brazil, British Honduras, and East Africa, including wengé, cocobolo, mutenye, pao rosa, and riopalisander. Each wood species formed a distinct sub-series. Due to the difficulty of sourcing these materials and their high cost, production numbers were extremely limited—typically only a few hundred pieces per design—each marked and numbered with its respective wood type.
The Rare Wood series can be understood as a direct manifestation of Quistgaard’s principle that form should emerge from material. As stated in contemporary Dansk Designs marketing: “Good design grows out of its materials.” This reflects an approach in which design is rooted in the inherent qualities of the material, rather than applied onto it. The dense tropical hardwoods used in the series contain high levels of natural oils, making them difficult to process and glue, and thus requiring a high degree of craftsmanship and material knowledge.
This ice bucket is crafted from wengé (Millettia laurentii), a heavy hardwood with a deep, pronounced grain. Its form presents a solid and stable volume, while the relationship between the handle and the body is both simple and precisely proportioned, giving the object a sculptural presence beyond its functional role. A plastic liner is fitted inside, addressing practical use while reflecting Dansk Designs’ broader strategy of integrating natural materials into modern living.
The Rare Wood series transforms materials once associated with luxury and exoticism into everyday domestic objects—such as salad bowls, trays, and ice buckets—placing the material itself at the center of the design narrative. This material-driven approach also marks a distinctive position of Danish design in the international context of the 1960s.
