During the 50-year collaboration between Wegner and the manufacturer Johannes Hansen, new works were frequently presented at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibitions. In the 1960 exhibition, they introduced the JH513. The display at the time consisted of a round table and four chairs.
Svend Erik Møller, editor of the newspaper Politiken, commented:
“This year Hans J. Wegner has designed an oak chair and an oak table—solid, vigorous, and wholesome. Everything is in order: elegantly resolved construction, correct and comfortable seating posture, and a beauty that seems timeless. He could perhaps teach the die-hard designers a thing or two about genuine functionalism—about being, rather than merely seeming.”
Sweden’s Dagens Nyheter reported:
“In Wegner’s room, within a space of striking simplicity, there stands only a large round table in light oak, arranged with four conference chairs upholstered in grey fabric. The composition is perfect in both form and line, pleasantly comfortable, serene in expression, and marked by the natural masculinity characteristic of the master. Even if there were nothing else at the exhibition, this ensemble alone would make it worth the visit.”
The JH513 was designed for conference settings, offering a composed and dignified seating experience suited to formal meetings. The generously proportioned seat and backrest provide ample support. The gently curved backrest embraces the body comfortably, while the subtly sloped seat—higher at the front and lower at the back—allows the spine to recline naturally. The rear legs taper inward from top to bottom before extending back for structural stability. The substantial armrests are sculpted into graceful curves for a secure and comfortable grip, making this a chair well suited for long periods of sitting without fatigue.
The design was produced in two sizes; this particular piece is the slightly smaller version, the JH513 MINI. The JH513 has since been discontinued and is now available only as a vintage piece.
