The Grand Prix chair builds on Arne Jacobsen’s one-piece molded plywood technique and ergonomic curves first explored in the 1955 “3107” series, but distinguishes itself with a more angular upper back profile and all-wood legs. The idea was to offer a light, modern chair for domestic settings to those who preferred wood over tubular steel.
The chair debuted at the Designer’s Spring Exhibition at the Danish Museum of Art & Design in 1957 and, after winning the Grand Prix at the same year’s Milan Triennale, it became known as the “Grand Prix,” an icon of Danish modern design. Fritz Hansen later introduced a metal-leg variant to meet public-space and stacking needs.
Production history: In production by Fritz Hansen from 1957, initially as the all-wood version (model 4130), followed by the metal-leg version (model 3130).
