Description

This FM wall-mounted shelving system was designed in 1957 by Danish designer Kai Kristiansen for Feldballes Møbelfabrik. It is one of the best-known and most successful furniture series produced through their collaboration. The modular system includes shelves, cabinets and desk units in a variety of sizes and configurations, allowing it to be freely arranged according to the dimensions of the wall, the spatial conditions and the user’s individual needs. The system was widely popular not only in the Nordic countries, but was also sold throughout other parts of Europe and in the United States.
Feldballes Møbelfabrik was founded in 1946 by cabinetmaker Svend Børge Feldballe (1918–) in Aarhus, Denmark’s second-largest city. During the 1960s and 1970s, the factory underwent several expansions and relocations. It was a Danish modern furniture manufacturer with its own brand identity, model-numbering system, export market and established collaborations with designers. Bookcases and shelving systems were among its principal products, approximately 50 percent of which were produced for export.
During the 1950s and 1960s, Kai Kristiansen designed desks, sideboards, chairs, chests of drawers and wall-mounted storage systems for Feldballes Møbelfabrik. Among these designs, the FM wall-mounted shelving system became the most successful product resulting from their collaboration.
The FM system is supported by metal uprights fixed directly to the wall. Each shelf is connected to the uprights by triangular wooden brackets and metal fittings, while the wooden cabinet units are fitted with metal hooks at the rear, allowing them to be mounted directly onto the uprights. This construction provides a stable support system that is also easy to adjust. The shelves and cabinet units can be repositioned at different heights, rearranged or supplemented with additional modules, allowing the entire system to adapt to changing spatial and storage requirements.
Kai Kristiansen frequently worked with teak and rosewood, and his furniture is known for its restrained proportions, finely executed joinery and clearly defined functionality. Manufactured by Feldballes Møbelfabrik, the FM system combines wooden cabinet units, a metal wall-mounted structure and a modular design concept. This enabled large-scale storage furniture to move beyond the limitations of conventional floor-standing cabinets, while retaining the Danish furniture tradition’s emphasis on material quality and refined craftsmanship.
This example is finished in richly figured rosewood veneer. The complete configuration includes shelves of different depths, a bookcase, a glass display cabinet and an illuminated light box shelf. The individual components may be freely arranged to suit the available space, creating a comprehensive FM wall-mounted system that combines display, storage and lighting functions.
