This book, written by design journalist Mike Rømer, focuses on Finn Juhl’s work as a furniture designer and the reintroduction of his classic designs by the Danish furniture company Onecollection. In 1981, Mike Rømer personally met and interviewed Finn Juhl. This encounter sparked a deep personal interest in Finn Juhl’s aesthetic philosophy and creative approach, and the interview from that time is included in the book.
Rather than being an academic publication that systematically documents Finn Juhl’s entire body of work, the book focuses on his design philosophy and creative approach as a groundbreaking and highly influential furniture designer. It also documents the process by which Onecollection resumed the production of Finn Juhl’s classic furniture, bringing these designs back into production after many years and giving them a renewed life and international recognition in Denmark and abroad.
Through interviews, design stories, and presentations of specific works, the book illustrates how Finn Juhl developed a furniture language distinct from Danish functionalism, characterized by sculptural forms, structural freedom, and a sensitive understanding of form and space. He is presented as one of the most important Danish furniture designers of the twentieth century.
This book is published in both Danish and English and includes a large number of illustrations and archival materials. It is an important publication for understanding Finn Juhl’s design philosophy and Onecollection’s role in reintroducing his work.
