Description

In 1951, continuing their research on molded seating, Charles and Ray Eames introduced a series of chairs constructed from metal wire, known as the Wire Chairs. The seat shell is formed by welding steel wires into a three-dimensional structure that is both sculptural and exceptionally light and airy. To enhance comfort, they designed a thin pad covering the back and seat areas. Its distinctive shape resembled a bikini swimsuit, earning the chair the popular nickname “Bikini Chair.”

The base employs the classic DSR “Eiffel Tower” structure, lending the design a strong architectural character. The chair stands as both a celebration of industrial material aesthetics and a precise balance between ergonomics and beauty. It represents an essential element of mid-20th-century design vocabulary and embodies the Eameses’ continuous exploration of new materials and forms.
