Description

The Model 100 is a double-sided desk produced by the Danish furniture manufacturer Brouers Møbelfabrik and is generally attributed to Erik Brouer, the owner of Brouers Møbelfabrik. In an original company advertisement, the desk is identified as “Design nr. 100.” Some sources have also attributed this model to Arne Vodder.

The front of the desk has a symmetrical arrangement, with three drawers on each side for a total of six. The upper drawer on each side is fitted with a lock, providing storage for documents and personal items. Each drawer is fitted with a square solid-wood handle, shaped with opposing curved recesses that create a form resembling the Chinese character “日.” Compared with handles seen on other examples of the Brouers Model 100, those on this particular desk have slightly softer outer edges and more rounded corners, a noteworthy variation in detail.

The broad rectangular tabletop is supported by timber frames at either side, each forming an almost rectangular outline. Cross rails beneath the top and the leg structures together form the main supporting framework, with the two drawer units and the bookcase at the rear fixed between them. The tabletop projects slightly beyond the structure on all sides and has gently rounded edges. The top and drawer fronts are finished in teak veneer, while the legs, handles and principal structural elements are made from solid wood.

Danish writing desks for individual use were often designed to be viewed and used from both sides. The working side typically accommodates a desk chair and drawers for documents, stationery and everyday work materials, while the reverse side often incorporates open bookshelves, allowing the desk to stand freely within a room rather than against a wall. A lounge or reading chair could be placed on the opposite side, with frequently used books kept within easy reach on the rear shelves. In this way, one side of the same piece of furniture could function as a workspace, while the other served as a more relaxed area for reading. The Model 100 is a characteristic example of this type of Danish freestanding desk, with both front and rear elevations fully designed for use and display.

Brouers Møbelfabrik was based in Aabyhøj, Denmark, and produced a wide range of desks, chests of drawers and other storage furniture from the late 1950s through the 1970s. The Model 100 appeared in the company’s advertising material by at least the late 1950s and continued to appear in product records during the 1960s. In addition to teak, examples of the same design are also known in rosewood.
