Description

The DS-44 is a single-seat lounge chair produced by the Swiss furniture manufacturer de Sede in the 1970s. It represents a phase in which the brand’s expertise in thick leather craftsmanship and comfort-oriented design had reached a mature stage. Originating from saddle and leather-making traditions, de Sede has long focused on the selection, processing, and structural application of high-quality leather. Its furniture designs are guided by the physical properties of materials and the experience of use, rather than by form-driven aesthetics.

In terms of materials, this piece features de Sede’s signature thick leather, commonly referred to as Neck Leather (bull neck leather), with a thickness approximately three to five times that of standard upholstery leather. This type of leather retains the naturally formed grain and structural characteristics of the bull’s neck, offering dense fibers, high strength, and exceptional durability. The chair is constructed using multiple leather panels, with the arrangement of leather segments and stitching determined primarily by structural stability and the distribution of material stress rather than decorative intent. This construction method allows the thick leather to accommodate natural stretching and deformation over time, enabling it to age gracefully while maintaining overall structural integrity.

In terms of use and comfort, the DS-44 is characterized by a deep seat and a low center of gravity, reflecting a load-bearing seating concept. Rather than encouraging an upright posture, the chair allows the body to settle naturally, distributing weight evenly across the entire volume. The seat features an adjustable sliding mechanism that can be manually extended to increase seat depth, offering various reclining angles and modes of use. When paired with the original factory-made ottoman, leg support is fully achieved, further enhancing its lounge-oriented character and reflecting the 1970s emphasis on comfort and relaxation.

The DS-44 is not attributed to a single named designer, reflecting de Sede’s design culture at the time, which was centered on workshop-based development and manufacturing expertise. Compared to the more form-oriented designs of the 1960s, the DS-44 marks a clearer shift toward user experience, structural logic, and material expression. Based on its formal language, leather craftsmanship, and structural configuration, this example can be dated to the early 1970s.

This piece is a vintage example produced in the 1970s. Over time, the leather has naturally matured, developing a distinctive patina and traces of use. The leather surface, stitching, and overall structure remain stable, preserving both its material qualities and period character. The original ottoman matches the chair in leather, construction, and proportions, forming the complete DS-44 configuration.
