Daybed Model 4311 is a sofa-bed designed by Børge Mogensen in 1958 for Fredericia Stolefabrik, and is among the early works from Mogensen’s collaboration with Fredericia.
Model 4311, a robust sofa-bed, represents an extension of Mogensen’s “social” furniture programme. It was designed for young people with a more informal way of living, combining the functions of a bed and a sofa within the living space, and thus suitable for use throughout the day. It can serve as seating in a living room, a place for reading and relaxation, and, when needed, as a temporary sleeping solution. Its low, horizontally extended profile allows it to integrate naturally into modern interiors, responding to the 1950s demand for spatial flexibility and functional integration.
Model 4311 continues Mogensen’s emphasis on clarity of structure and stable proportions. The design does not rely on decorative elements; instead, through a simple wooden frame, substantial cushions, and strong horizontal lines, it achieves a restrained and enduring character. For Mogensen, the value of furniture does not lie in formal expression, but in its ability to serve everyday life over time.
The design was produced in two widths (88 cm and 101 cm), with a length of 195 cm. When the 101 cm version is placed in a corner, one of the two removable back sections can be positioned at a right angle against the wall, transforming it into a chaise-like form that allows the user to rest with legs raised; however, this example is the 88 cm version.
Model 4311 reflects the balance in postwar Danish furniture design between material, craftsmanship, and durability. With its restrained form accommodating multiple functions, it can be understood as a concrete response by Mogensen to modern domestic space and ways of living. The model was produced for a relatively short period from the late 1950s to the 1960s, and is comparatively rare on the vintage market. The foam and upholstery have both been renewed to meet contemporary standards of use and maintenance.
