Description

In the mid-1960s, the Danish manufacturer France & Søn expanded decisively from domestic furniture into the office sector. Within this context, the company collaborated with Finn Juhl to develop an entirely new line of office furnishings. Centered around the Diplomat chair, this series included desks (such as Model 952), conference tables, seating (Model 209), and a range of cabinet and wall-mounted storage units. For this project, Juhl once again recalibrated his formal vocabulary—shifting from the free, organic constructions of the 1950s toward a more precise, geometric, and modular structural logic.

Introduced in 1966, the Cresco system formed the wall and storage component of this office program, structurally aligned with the functional framework established by the Diplomat desk and chair designed in 1962. Built around a variety of cabinet modules, drawer units, sliding-door compartments, and open shelving, Cresco could be freely configured according to spatial requirements. It represents one of the most fully realized expressions of Juhl’s concept of “system furniture.”

Cresco was constructed entirely from veneered carcasses. Contemporary sources note that the Diplomat series marked France & Søn’s shift from solid-wood tabletops to veneered surfaces—a necessary transition as the company oriented itself toward the international office market. Cresco continued along this trajectory, employing lightweight, standardized, and export-friendly construction to meet the diverse needs of corporate interiors. Its disciplined, rational lines echoed the geometric structure of the Diplomat chair and desk, creating a coherent and orderly visual system.

With its carefully selected materials, precise proportions, and highly adaptable architecture, the Cresco cabinet system stands as one of Finn Juhl’s key achievements in modular furniture design, and a significant Danish response to the pressures of globalization and changing office environments in the 1960s.
