Description

Piet Hein (1905–1996) was a prominent Danish polymath active in the fields of poetry, mathematics, and design. Between the 1960s and 1970s, he collaborated with the Danish manufacturer Skjøde Knudsen to produce a series of games, including Soma, Hex (Con-Tac-Tix), Polytaire, and Morra.

Skjøde Knudsen was originally a bookkeeper who later began manufacturing wooden games. Combining design with fine craftsmanship, these products became popular in Danish households and were even embraced by the Royal Family at Amalienborg. Their collaboration lasted approximately one decade.

Con-Tac-Tix was conceived by Piet Hein in 1942, originally under the name "Polygon." It is a connection-based board game. The original board consists of a grid of hexagonal cells arranged in a rhombus shape, with each of the four sides marked in one of two colors, such that opposite sides share the same color. Two players take turns selecting a cell and marking it with their own color. The objective is to establish a continuous path (which may meander) connecting the two sides assigned to their color. The first player to successfully complete this connection wins.

In 1952, the American toy company Parker Brothers launched a game similar to Polygon, naming it "Hex."

In the 1960s, through his collaboration with Skjøde, Piet Hein released his own version under the name Con-Tac-Tix.
