There are two commonly cited accounts regarding the origin of Hans J. Wegner’s inspiration for the “China Chair.” One suggests that, as a young man, he encountered a set of Chinese chair models in a Danish maritime museum—models said to have been brought back from China by Danish sailors. Another suggests that he saw photographs of Ming dynasty horseshoe-back armchairs in Møbelkunsten, a furniture history book published in 1932 by Ole Wanscher, which inspired him to study the proportions and construction of traditional Chinese furniture.
Designed in 1943, the China Chair (Model 4283) is one of Hans J. Wegner’s early and significant works. Although its form closely resembles the traditional Ming-style horseshoe-back armchair, Wegner reinterpreted the design according to modern ergonomic principles. The seat height was lowered to allow a more relaxed sitting posture, while the elegantly curved S-shaped back splat provides support for both the back and lumbar area.
The continuous armrest follows the structural language of traditional Chinese chairs and is constructed from three bent wooden sections joined with traditional joinery. The seat consists of woven canvas webbing with a loose leather cushion, creating a structure that is both lightweight and comfortable.
The China Chair demonstrates Wegner’s deep understanding of Chinese furniture construction and laid the foundation for later masterpieces such as the CH24 (1949) and Round Chair (1949).
