CH27 Easy Chair

Description

Designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1951 for Carl Hansen & Søn, the CH27 lounge chair is one of the works from Wegner’s highly experimental period in the early 1950s.

In this design, Wegner brought together key elements from three earlier chairs, synthesizing their characteristics into a single, cohesive form. These references include the folding chair JH512 (1949), as well as two lounge chairs from 1950: the iconic “Dolphin Chair” JH510 and the CH25.

Design elements integrated into the CH27 include:

JH512 Folding Chair (1949):
The refined woven cane seat, emphasizing lightness and craftsmanship.

Dolphin Chair JH510 (1950):
The distinctive hooked detail at the top of the backrest, originally designed to allow the addition of an optional headrest.

CH25 Lounge Chair (1950):
The elegant solid-wood frame construction, featuring V-shaped front legs that split near the seat—one branch supporting the seat, the other extending upward to form the armrests. The seat and rear legs are connected by a continuous, flowing curve, departing from the conventional integration of backrest and rear legs.

Continuing Wegner’s deep commitment to ergonomics, the CH27 combines visual elegance with a high level of comfort. The cane seat and backrest also make it particularly well suited to warm climates such as Taiwan.

Unfortunately, production of the CH27 appears to have ceased around the 1960s, making it a rare collector’s piece today. It is now encountered only on the vintage market. The cane seat and backrest of this example have been recently and completely renewed.
