The AX coffee table comes from the classic AX series by the Danish duo Hvidt & Mølgaard. Using laminated bentwood, it achieves both lightness and rigidity. The top has softly rounded corners; at the top of each leg, distinctive Y-shaped brackets support the surface, tied together by a stretcher for stability. The contrast between the teak surface and the laminated beech core highlights the precise proportions and refined craftsmanship of Danish Modern design.
Following the 1947 AX armchair, the AX series expanded around 1950 to include table forms. At 56 cm high, this piece sits between a coffee table and an elevated side table, well suited to living rooms, reading corners, or display settings.
Designed in 1947, the AX Armchair is one of Hvidt & Mølgaard’s most representative works, produced by Fritz Hansen. Its structure employs molded plywood techniques derived from wartime aircraft manufacturing, laminating, bending, and pressing multiple veneers to create ergonomically double-curved seat and back shells. The AX chair was also among Denmark’s earliest knock-down furniture designs: the side frames, central backrest, and seat are bolted together, reducing shipping costs and contributing to its international success. By combining simplicity, utility, and industrial methods, the duo exerted a lasting influence on Danish furniture design.
