Description

The Model 462A armchair was designed by Arne Vodder for Sibast Møbler. Its slender armrests extend forward from the rear frame and connect seamlessly with the front legs, creating an organic, sculptural profile. The rear legs incline slightly backwards, forming a stable geometric structure together with the front legs and armrests.

The backrest and seat are upholstered in black leather. The backrest has an organically rounded form, broader at the top and narrowing towards the bottom. Suspended within the wooden frame, it creates a sense of visual lightness. The gently recessed seat follows ergonomic principles and provides comfortable support for the user.

Vodder described his approach to design as follows:

“Design must satisfy a need in a functional way, while also possessing aesthetic beauty—in my view, the simpler the design, the more beautiful it is.”

Arne Vodder trained in the furniture workshop of his father’s elder cousin, Niels Vodder. He later studied at the School of Interior Design (Skolen for Boligindretning), where Finn Juhl taught, as well as at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. In 1951, he established a design studio with Anton Borg, working in both interior and furniture design. In addition to Sibast, Vodder collaborated with manufacturers including Winther, Carl Brørup, France & Daverkosen, Vamo, Bovirke, and Fritz Hansen.

From the early 1950s to the early 1980s, Vodder designed an extensive range of furniture for Sibast Møbler, including lounge chairs, sideboards, chests of drawers, dressing tables, sofa sets, dining tables, dining chairs, executive office furnishings, and conference furniture.

Sibast Møbler was founded in 1908 by cabinetmaker P. Olsen Sibast in Stenstrup on the Danish island of Funen. During the golden age of Danish furniture design in the 1950s and 1960s, he and his son, Helge Sibast, expanded the company into a furniture manufacturer employing more than 120 craftspeople. Sibast collaborated with designers including Arne Vodder, Grete Jalk, Kurt Østervig, and Børge Rammeskov, achieving considerable success both in Denmark and in international export markets.

The company was sold in 1984 and subsequently passed out of the Sibast family’s ownership. In 2012, fourth-generation family member Ditlev Sibast and his wife Anna re-established Sibast Furniture, continuing the family’s tradition of furniture production and design. The company has since reintroduced several works by Arne Vodder, although the Model 462A is not currently included in its official production range.
