Description

The Ant Chair was introduced in October 1952. It was designed by Arne Jacobsen for the staff canteen of the Danish pharmaceutical company Novo and was also Jacobsen’s first dining chair designed in laminated plywood. The chair features a shell pressure-moulded from nine layers of wood veneer, integrating the seat and backrest into a single continuous structure with compound curves. Its slender waist creates a distinctive silhouette resembling an ant raising its head, while also providing the thin backrest with the necessary strength and flexibility. The original Ant was the three-legged version, Model 3100.

The Ant Chair marked the beginning of a series of laminated plywood dining chairs designed by Jacobsen in collaboration with Fritz Hansen. Jacobsen initially found it difficult to persuade Fritz Hansen to manufacture this bold new design. However, a large order from Novo eventually convinced Fritz Hansen to put the chair into production and paved the way for Jacobsen’s subsequent series of plywood dining-chair designs.

Following Jacobsen’s death in 1971, Fritz Hansen incorporated the four-legged version of the Ant, Model 3101, into its regular product range. The four-legged Model 3101 offered greater stability and safety in use while also accommodating a wider variety of spatial requirements. Lightweight, comfortable and stackable, it has become an enduring classic of Danish design.
