Description

The Actulum is a multipurpose chair designed by Norwegian designer Peter Opsvik, intended for use at personal workstations, in meeting rooms, or dining areas. The curved wooden runners allow the chair to tilt naturally with the body’s inclination, creating a pendulum-like movement. Although it resembles the back-and-forth motion of a rocking chair, the design actually provides two distinct seating angles depending on the sitter’s center of gravity.

When focusing on work and leaning forward toward the table, the chair tilts forward and supports an upright posture without the need for a backrest. When relaxing and leaning back, the chair tilts backward, allowing the sitter to rest against the backrest.

The backrest itself is a distinctive feature: a centrally placed rectangular cushion supports the spine while leaving the chest free to expand, encouraging an open posture.

Peter Opsvik’s design philosophy is rooted in human nature. He believes that people are inherently in constant motion, and restricting this through rigid seating goes against human needs. With this in mind, he created a series of multifunctional chairs that accommodate the body’s natural variety of sitting positions.

The Actulum was designed in 1995 and produced by Stokke from 1995 to 2006. After 2006, Stokke spun off its adult ergonomic seating line (including Opsvik’s Variable balans and Gravity balans) into the independent brand Varier Furniture.
