Description

The Series 7 chair was designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1955 for Fritz Hansen. As part of his molded plywood dining chair series, it remains one of the most widely produced and recognized designs within Danish modern furniture.

The backrest and seat are formed from a single continuous shell. The laminated construction consists of nine layers of wood veneer arranged with alternating grain directions, combined with two layers of cotton textile. This structure allows for complex multidirectional curvature, precisely controlled to follow the contours of the body. The result is a chair that achieves both lightness and structural resilience. Upholstery further softens the seating surface, enhancing comfort. The four-legged base, made of slender steel tubing, emphasizes both visual lightness and stability.

This example features an upholstered version produced through a collaboration between Fritz Hansen and Paul Smith. The textile is drawn from Paul Smith’s Stripes series, originally developed for the American textile manufacturer Maharam. Applied to the existing structure, the fabric introduces a layer of color and pattern, transforming the chair’s restrained industrial form into a more rhythmical and contemporary expression, marking a cross-disciplinary reinterpretation.
