Description

Playful in spirit, Hans Bølling began spending time in the workshop from the age of fourteen, often staying there until midnight, drawing sketches, making models, and creating all kinds of objects out of wood. For him, this was a form of play, and from this playfulness came many charming and imaginative works.

In his youth, after winning a design award, he used the prize money to purchase woodworking equipment and began making these richly varied and delightful wooden figures. At first, they were made as gifts for his wife and close friends. As they were warmly received, he gradually began producing and selling these carved wooden dolls.

These Viking figures by Hans Bølling display several typical features: lathe-turned solid wood bodies, real fur used for beards and hair, cord arms, and, in some examples, shields and spears. Most Viking figures are small wooden dolls measuring just over ten centimeters in height, while larger versions are rarely seen.

In addition to the pieces made by Hans Bølling himself, some of his wooden figures were produced by the Danish woodcraft workshop Orskov & Co. in the 1960s. In recent years, the Danish brand ARCHITECTMADE has reissued several of his wooden figures, though not the Viking figures.
