Viggo Vagnby (1896–1966) had a multifaceted career spanning design, illustration, and architecture. In his youth, he studied painting in Aarhus before traveling to France in the early 1920s. He later worked as an advertising designer and exhibition architect, eventually establishing his own drawing studio in Aalborg.
His most significant work is the world-renowned Wonderful Copenhagen poster from 1953. In this image, Vagnby portrays Copenhagen as a welcoming and charming city—so safe and harmonious that even a mother duck can calmly lead her ducklings across the street.
The original 1953 version was a lithograph printed by J. Christian Sørensen & Co. in Copenhagen. In the 1970s and 1980s, it was reissued as a promotional poster by the Copenhagen Tourist Association. The poster has been repeatedly recognized as one of the finest posters in the world and, more than half a century after its creation, continues to enjoy enduring popularity.
