Description

The Model 308 is a serving trolley designed by Danish designer Henning Korch for the Silkeborg furniture manufacturer C.F. Christensen. The design has often been attributed to Johannes Andersen, who also collaborated with the company. However, existing Danish auction records, original manufacturer’s markings and furniture-fair catalogue references support Henning Korch as the correct designer.

The trolley provides three levels of storage. The upper and lower tiers consist of full-width shelves with oak-veneered surfaces and slightly raised edges, helping to prevent tableware from sliding off while the trolley is being moved. The middle shelf occupies only part of the frame and is finished with a black wear-resistant laminate, making it suitable for glasses, barware or objects that may leave water marks. The open space beside it allows taller bottles and containers to stand directly on the lower shelf. This arrangement accommodates objects of different heights and is one of the Model 308’s most recognisable features.

Four upright supports extend from the base to above the upper shelf and are joined at each end by horizontal rails. These elements form both the structural frame and convenient handles for moving the trolley. The edges of the wooden components are softly rounded, while the uprights, shelves and rails meet in smooth transitions, giving the otherwise rectilinear three-tier structure a less rigid appearance. Four castors allow the trolley to move easily between dining, living and working areas.

This example is made from warm-toned oak, with a consistent appearance across the solid-wood frame and veneered shelves. The black surface of the middle tier provides a clear visual contrast while emphasising its function as an area for preparing and serving drinks. In addition to use as a serving or bar trolley, it may also be used to display tea wares, books, plants or everyday objects.

Condition: The black middle shelf, wooden frame and castors show wear and surface marks consistent with long-term use and age.
