Description

Johannes Andersen (1903–1991) was a Danish furniture designer active during the mid-twentieth century. Trained as a cabinetmaker, he later established his own design studio. His work encompassed tables, chairs and storage furniture, and he collaborated with manufacturers including C.F. Christensen, Uldum Møbelfabrik and Trensum of Sweden. Flowing silhouettes, carefully shaped wooden components and a refined sense of proportion are recurring features of his furniture.

This lounge armchair was produced around 1960 by C.F. Christensen of Silkeborg, a manufacturer also commonly known as CFC Silkeborg. During the mid-twentieth century, the company collaborated with designers including Johannes Andersen, Illum Wikkelsø and Henning Korch, and was particularly known for furniture made from hardwoods such as teak and rosewood.

The frame is constructed from solid teak. The armrests taper to a fine point at the front, rise gently towards the rear and continue along either side of the backrest, forming a continuous and expansive curve. The tops of the front legs extend slightly above the seat frame, turning the junction between the wooden components into a visible design detail. Generously proportioned seat and back cushions are set within the slender frame, providing ample support while preserving an open and lightweight appearance.

Unlike conventional upholstered armchairs with boxy lines and enclosed structures, this design clearly separates the upholstered elements from the load-bearing wooden frame. The teak armrests provide support while also forming the chair’s most distinctive visual feature. Their tapering front ends and gradually rising curves towards the back reflect the organic forms often associated with Johannes Andersen’s furniture. The chair is currently upholstered in contrasting light- and dark-grey fabrics and is suitable as a lounge chair, reading chair or occasional chair in a reception area.
