Designed in 1969 by Ettore Sottsass and Perry A. King for Olivetti, the Valentine portable typewriter is widely regarded as one of the most iconic works of 20th-century industrial design. It emerged during a period when companies such as Braun and Brionvega—alongside Olivetti—were actively redefining the language of product and industrial design.
With its vivid red plastic shell and clean, geometric form, the Valentine challenged the conventional perception of typewriters as heavy, purely mechanical office machines. Instead, it emphasized lightness, mobility, and everyday usability. Its rigid carrying case functions both as protection and as an integral part of the design, transforming the typewriter into a personal, portable object.
More than a functional writing device, the Valentine stands as a design statement—an object that elevates industrial production into a cultural symbol and a reflection of lifestyle. It has been widely documented in design literature, including Design of the 20th Century by Charlotte & Peter Fiell, and remains part of major museum collections.
