Description

This compact five-drawer chest was designed by Danish designer Henning Jørgensen for Fredericia Møbelfabrik and produced around the 1950s or 1960s. The same design was made in both rosewood and teak, with variations in width and number of drawers. Measuring only 60 cm wide, this example has a narrow, upright form that provides practical, tiered storage within a limited space.

The cabinet contains five drawers of equal height. The drawer fronts are finished in rosewood veneer, with the grain extending outwards from the centre and displaying natural variations ranging from deep brown to reddish brown. A horizontal solid-wood rail runs along the upper edge of each drawer, with a shallow curved recess carved into either side for opening the drawer from below. Rather than being separately attached to the drawer fronts, the handles are integrated into these horizontal rails, creating a continuous and orderly rhythm across the five drawers. Other documented examples of the same model similarly feature shaped solid-wood handles and streamlined front edges.

The upright side frames extend slightly above the cabinet top and are joined by a horizontal rail at the rear, forming a shallow raised rim. This detail helps prevent objects placed on the top from slipping off and creates a tray-like surface suitable for display. Four slender, tapered legs raise the cabinet above the floor, reducing the visual weight of the dark rosewood and giving the front elevation a balanced, elongated proportion.

The cabinet’s decorative character is concentrated in the timber itself, the shaped drawer edges and the subtle contours of the handles. Viewed closely, the horizontal rails between the drawers are not simple straight elements: they gradually project outwards around the handle positions before returning smoothly to their original thickness. These variations are discreet from a distance, yet clearly indicate where the fingers meet the wood during use, illustrating the Danish furniture tradition of integrating function into carefully considered joinery and woodworking details.
