丹麥在1891年Jutland (Vamdrup)附近的的古墓遺址Guldhoj (Gold Hill)中挖掘出一張歐洲青銅時期西元前1400年的折凳(目前收藏於National Museum of Denmark)，雖然凳面的水獺皮已經殘破，但碳化的木質結構依舊完好，這張折凳是現今所知存世最早的歐洲家具。
Poul Hundevad是一位訓練有素的木匠，在Vamdrup有自己的木工車床工坊和家具廠。他在1960年以這件考古遺物為範本，設計出現代版的Guldhoj Stool，這張Guldhoj Stool成為他最受歡迎的商品，生產超過15,000張。
本件在樣式和尺寸上和同時期的埃及凳類似，有可能是趨同演化，也有一說是由商旅自遙遠的埃及傳播而來。
