Description

This bowl-shaped ceramic vessel was produced at Norwegian ceramic artist Rolf Hansen’s workshop in Kongsberg. Its low, full-bodied form features a rounded lower section, while the upper body narrows inward before flaring gently towards the rim. The broad opening allows the piece to function as a vase, planter, or independent decorative object.

The vessel is made from coarse, dark-brown clay with a distinctly granular texture. The interior and upper section are covered with a mottled grey-green glaze, while the lower body retains its deep brown clay colour, creating a clear and restrained contrast between the two sections. Natural variations in the thickness and colour of the glaze produce shades of grey-green, beige-brown, and locally darker brown, preserving the firing marks and tactile qualities characteristic of studio pottery.

The surface decoration is arranged in several horizontal bands. Using tools of different shapes, Hansen repeatedly impressed the clay with squares, dots, short lines, semicircles, and arch-like motifs. Although the patterns follow an underlying rhythm, their spacing, depth, and alignment retain the deliberate irregularity of handwork. The combination of rugged clay, subdued glaze colours, and abstract motifs resembling archaic symbols reflects the earthy yet rhythmic character of post-war Scandinavian studio ceramics.

The underside bears the complete hand-incised signature:

Rolf Hansen was a Norwegian ceramic artist. In 1947, he co-founded Kongsberg Keramikk with thrower Sven Skjæveland and Danish ceramicist Birgitte Carlsen. According to the Norwegian Artists’ Dictionary, the workshop initially produced functional pottery decorated with slips, as well as coarse ceramic works made from clay containing grog. Hansen was initially responsible primarily for the surface decoration of the objects and gradually came to direct the workshop’s artistic development.

The Norwegian encyclopaedia records a Kongsberg Keramikk vase dating from around 1950 that similarly combines earthenware, glaze, and incised decoration. During the early 1950s, Hansen also produced a series of plates, jars, and vases decorated with abstract motifs. Based on comparisons of the form, coarse clay body, grey-green glaze, and banded impressed decoration, this piece can reasonably be dated to the 1950s.
