Hans J. Wegner began collaborating with Ry Møbler in 1950 on the production of cabinet furniture.
The RY 100 is a modular shelving system designed by Wegner in 1960 for the Danish furniture manufacturer Ry Møbler. Its design was developed from the wall-mounted shelving unit first presented by Wegner and the Johannes Hansen workshop at the 1954 Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition. Wegner subsequently refined the concept into a complete furniture system suitable for standardised production and flexible configuration.
The RY 100 is built around two full-height vertical side panels, each fitted with adjustable metal feet at the base. Shelves, cabinets and other modules are secured between the side panels. Depending on spatial and storage requirements, the user could combine open shelves, sliding-door cabinets, drawer units and work surfaces, or even incorporate a bed. This allowed the system to be placed against a wall or used as a freestanding room divider.
This example is a single-bay teak configuration. It features a slatted sliding-door cabinet at the top, with elongated recessed grooves serving as handles; open shelving in the middle; and a two-drawer cabinet with a lower shelf beneath. The circular recesses and horizontal metal pull bars on the drawer fronts are among the most distinctive details of the RY 100 series.
Its composition of regular vertical and horizontal lines gives the system both an architectural character and a high degree of functionality. The design reflects Wegner’s ability to combine the quality of traditional cabinetmaking with standardised construction and the practical requirements of modern living.
