Description

This large glazed earthenware dish, pattern 719 and form 2884, was designed by Nils Thorsson for Royal Copenhagen as part of the BACA series and was produced circa 1969–1974.

From the late 1960s to the early 1970s, Royal Copenhagen introduced the BACA series of glazed earthenware. Several artists contributed designs to the collection, which was developed under the direction of Nils Thorsson. Thorsson designed many of the forms as well as some of the decorative patterns, while other artists, including Johanne Gerber and Ellen Malmer, created their own distinctive motifs for the series.

The underside bears the Royal Copenhagen mark, the pattern and form number 719/2884, the artist’s cipher within the BACA circle, and the painter’s signature.

Pattern 719 is one of the most recognisable designs in the BACA series. Its surface is composed of framed pictorial motifs in shades of brown, charcoal grey, black, and off-white. The imagery includes groups of fish and individual fish, flowers, leaves or aquatic plants, bird-like or abstract animal forms, repeated linear patterns, incised details, and geometric borders.

Because of variations in glaze thickness, kiln temperature, and hand-finishing, each example displays slight differences in its brown tonal effects and surface texture.
