Plexus is a living room furniture series designed by Illum Wikkelsø for the furniture manufacturer C.F. Christensen. Based on a system of seating units, the series can be configured into sofas of different sizes and complemented by side tables and coffee tables.
Illum Wikkelsø was born in Diernæs, near Faaborg on the Danish island of Funen. He trained as a cabinetmaker at a young age and, after completing his apprenticeship in 1940, moved to Copenhagen to continue his education. He attended the Danish School of Arts and Crafts, where he studied under Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen, and in 1943 entered the furniture program at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Kaare Klint. He also worked for cabinetmaker Jacob Kjær and for the architectural practice of Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen. In 1944, he moved to Aarhus, and in 1954 established his own design studio. He subsequently collaborated with a number of Danish furniture manufacturers, including C.F. Christensen, Søren Willadsen, and N. Eilersen.
C.F. Christensen was founded in 1899 in Silkeborg, central Jutland. It began as a small woodturning workshop, producing turned components such as furniture legs as well as lamp bases, pipes, curtain rods, and other wooden objects. In the late 1930s, the founder’s sons, Knud and Erik Christensen, joined the company and gradually shifted its focus from woodturning to furniture production. By the early 1940s, the company was already exporting to Norway, and around 1950 it successfully entered major export markets including the United States and Germany, developing into one of Silkeborg’s export-oriented furniture manufacturers.
Plexus became one of the important series created through the collaboration between Wikkelsø and C.F. Christensen. The design was conceived with serial production in mind. The seating is assembled from two types of wooden frame components joined with bolts, with the core concept centered on a structure that can be dismantled and reconfigured. Curved wooden frames form the backrest and armrests, with inset French cane panels creating an open and visually light structure. Together with separate upholstered seat and back cushions, the design balances visual lightness with comfort.
The modular construction allows Plexus to be rearranged according to the space in which it is used. The seating system includes armless, single-arm, and double-arm units, all based on the same fundamental components and capable of forming either individual chairs or multi-seat sofas. A two-seater sofa, for example, can be composed of left- and right-hand single-arm units, which may also be separated and used individually. In addition to seating, the series includes coffee tables in various sizes and flower stands, allowing different configurations to be created according to the scale and needs of the living space.
