The Trinidad Chair was designed in 1993 by Nanna Ditzel, one of the most influential female designers of twentieth-century Denmark. She spent a period of time living in the Caribbean region of Central America, where the colonial-style wooden buildings were often decorated with intricate perforated architectural details known as Gingerbread Facades. Ditzel transformed her experiences of living there into the design of the Trinidad Armchair, an elegant dining chair that allows light, shadow and air to pass through it, creating constantly changing patterns of light within the surrounding space.
The fan-shaped backrest of the Trinidad Chair is pressure-moulded from laminated plywood, while the backrest and seat are constructed as separate elements. Ditzel employed the then-advanced technology of five-axis CNC machining to cut precise grooves into the plywood, forming the perforated backrest and seat. These components are secured to the slender tubular steel frame with steel rivets, giving the overall structure an exceptionally light appearance. The curved laminated plywood follows the contours of the human body, providing a high degree of comfort and support.
The Trinidad Chair was first exhibited at the Scandinavian Furniture Fair in 1993 and became one of the most representative works of Nanna Ditzel’s design career during the 1990s.
This Trinidad Chair, Model 3397, is the upholstered armchair version of the Trinidad series. It features a leather-upholstered cushion fitted to the wooden seat shell, while moulded laminated plywood armrests are mounted on either side of the tubular steel frame. The upholstered seat provides softness and comfort for the user, while the armrests offer comfortable support for the arms.
