Description

Rud Thygesen (1932–2019) and Johnny Sørensen (1944–) graduated from the Furniture Department of the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts in 1966 and 1967, respectively. They subsequently established a joint design studio, beginning a collaboration that continued until 1994. Their work encompassed furniture for domestic, office and public environments, and became particularly noted for its use of laminated wood and moulded plywood techniques. Among the manufacturers they worked with were Magnus Olesen, Botium, Erik Boisen, PP Linie and Niels Smidt.

The King Series originated in designs submitted by the two designers to a furniture competition held by the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild between 1968 and 1969. The original pieces were made by cabinetmakers Find Christensen and Willum Larsen and received first prize in the competition. In 1969, the furniture was presented to King Frederik IX of Denmark on the occasion of his seventieth birthday, giving rise to the name Kongemøblerne, or “The King’s Furniture.” The series was later put into production by Botium.

The Model 7512 armchair was added to the King Series in 1981. Its oak frame is fitted with a gently curved cane backrest that follows the seated posture, together with a removable leather seat cushion. Rectilinear armrests, exposed joinery and the subtly curved seat frame soften the chair’s otherwise disciplined geometric construction. Compared with the low lounge chairs of the original series, this model has a higher back and more compact proportions, making it suitable as a dining chair, desk chair or conference armchair.
